

The commune's name is said to have originated from an ancient chapel built by the abbesses of Cusset around the year 1000, on land belonging to them, formerly known as "la Chapelle en Montagne".

As a result, they appointed the priest and received the benefits of worship. The modest Romanesque building dedicated to Saint Cosme and Saint Damien has unfortunately disappeared. A church was rebuilt in 1905 by the architect Mitton, in a neo-Romanesque style. The church has a Latin cross plan with a projecting transept. The steeple is a porch belfry, topped by a slate spire, located on the west façade. A circular staircase turret adjoins the bell tower on the north side.
