Description

14 rooms in 2 fortification buildings will take you on a journey through the history of Charroux, from the Gallo-Roman period to the 20th century, through objects, documents, sculptures, furniture and workshops. Don't miss the enigmatic Unknown Nude Beauty!
Classified among the "Most Beautiful Villages of France", the ancient town of Charroux has retained its very particular urban structure that the large model at the Museum allows to decipher: in the quadrilateral of the Roman camp are inscribed the citadel and the interior fortification of the free town. Free visit with audioguide, sheet or tablet. By following the common thread of the inventory of the Charroux chimneys, you will discover the history of a town that has become a village: the Franchise Charter of 1245 and the Christ du Toral. The sarcophagus and the model of the commandery of the Templars. The enigma of the Belle Nue Inconnue or that of the Lady of Chavet imprisoned in the Benedictine Convent. The Phrygian Cap of the Popular Society and the ups and downs of the Revolution, Charroux capital of the canton. City clocks and the Marching Band. The school through the centuries. The tragic fate of Raoul Defournoux in the war of 14-18. The tacit community of Bajauds, oil mills and distillers. La Moutarde de Charroux founded in 1790 and revived in 1990. The craftsmen's workshops and the firefighters' showcase. The defense tower of the Porte d'Orient another sarcophagus. And many other familiar or mysterious things to discover from Charroux's past, a summary of the History of France, which awakens echoes in each of the visitors.
