Le Mayet-de-Montagne, at a crossroads, lies on a plateau bordered by the Besbre and Sichon valleys. To the south, the commune is dominated by the Bizin.
For several decades, Le Bizin provided granite for the granite-makers of Le Mayet-de-Montagne. This granite had the particularity of containing large pink crystals: feldspar. These encrustations in the stone are called toads.
