The parish of Abrest originally belonged to the former diocese of Clermont, and was then part of a priory-cure dependent on the abbey of Cusset.
Nothing remains of the original church, fortified in the 16th century.
The present church, built between 1787 and 1791, was closed in 1793 and reopened in 1808. After repairs to the bell tower (1836), it was enlarged in 1856-1861 by Vichy architect Batilliat, who rebuilt the choir, raised the walls by two meters and rebuilt the vaults. In 1875, the vaults of the side chapels were raised. Work on the railroad forced the bell tower to be set back four meters (1928). Wall paintings, reported...
